Famous for its gold mines and milk-production industry, Kolar has been an important hub of Karnataka since 350 CE. It is currently one of the largest milk producers in the world and the largest in South India. It is a historic town, once known as the sacred Avantika-Kshetra, famous for its religious temples and spots.The city was initially known for its gold as well. It was once called the 'Golden City of India' because of the Kolar Gold Fields, which was one of the largest Gold Mines in the world until it was shut down in 2001.
